Ohio lineman evaluating options
If Ohio offensive lineman Eric Franklin has any early favorites, he's not yet signaling who those might be.
The Youngstown Cardinal Mooney offensive line prospect has nine offers, including from Purdue, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Kansas and Indiana, along with a host of MAC schools.
"I'm open to anybody to open to looking at me and recruiting me," the 6-foot-7, 290-pounder said Monday night.
Franklin says Purdue, Michigan State and Ball State are three of the latest to offer, and Cincinnati, where he took his only camp trip earlier this month, might be close. He says Boiler assistant coach Brian Rock stopped by his school to see him and a few other Cardinal Mooney players.
"And said they'd be in contact with us," Franklin said. "Within a week later, I was notified that they had offered me a scholarship. Then, Coach Rock told me directly that they were offering me."
Franklin admits he doesn't know much about the Boilermakers, but he could say the same about many of the schools on his offer list. He hasn't been able to take many unofficial visits this spring and summer, but hopes to start evaluating schools later.
"I'm probably going to do the official ones in the fall," he said, "because right now with my workout schedule I only have Friday and Sunday off, but I work too. And so does my mom and grandparents, so it's sort of hard for me to get away this time of year."
One of the schools that might be worthy of an official visit is Purdue. Although Franklin didn't want to name favorites Monday, he alluded to a possible visit to West Lafayette in the future.
"I haven't been over there yet," he said, "but I want to try to get up there, to see the facilities and learn a little bit more.
"I'll probably make a decision a little bit after the fall, after I make my visits."
Franklin, who wants to major in sports management, says graduation rate and his major are important in choosing a school.
"And the program, the facilities and the environment," he said.
