Vegas running back up to four offers
A time of 4.3 in the 40-yard dash and better than 1,900 yards rushing a year ago have college coaches hot on the trail of Las Vegas High School back Stephen Nixon. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound Nixon currently holds four offers in the off-season.
"Right now I have offers from UNLV, Colorado State, Utah State and Northern Arizona," Nixon said.
The all-purpose back rushed for 1,954 yards and 23 scores a year ago, posting a 9.3 yards per carry average. As a sophomore he ran for another 1,173 yards, using a style he says is reminiscent of Saints back Reggie Bush.
Nixon, who squats 385 pounds, said his Cimaron High School was knocked out of the second round of the Nevada state playoffs last season. He added that individually, he prides himself on paying attention, doing his assignments and playing with a high effort.
Turning his sights towards recruitment, Nixon said he is looking forward to taking some visits during the schools year and is trying to get an idea about the schools who have already offered him a scholarship. He said he didn't know much about Utah State and knew UNLV was a good school and a strong program. He added he has spoken with Colorado State quarterbacks coach Daren Wilkinson twice this season.
"He said it is very cool up there and they are very interested in me," Nixon said. "I like their offense, but I don't know about the weather."
Nixon said he is willing to leave Nevada for college and is considering a major in criminal justice or communications. For now he is returning from a hamstring injury that kept him out of nearly the entire track season.
