Hagan still favors Ohio State
Canonsburg (Pa.) Canon McMillan safety Chad Hagan had patiently waited his entire recruiting process for an offer from Ohio State and just about a month ago the talented safety got his wish.
While Hagan still plans to make another visit to Columbus before he makes his eventual decision, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound junior defensive back will not be in attendance for the Buckeyes senior advance camp today.
"I know I should be up there be up there eventually, but I can't go to the camp because my coach had something planned for this week," Hagan said. "We are thinking about going up in a few weeks or some time after that."
Despite not making it to Columbus for today's camp, Hagan still maintains that Ohio State is up and away his top school at the moment. While he does still want to go and visit with the coaching staff and see things again, Hagan is pretty clear on who the leader is in his recruitment.
"Ohio State is my No. 1 and nothing has really changed. Ohio State is my No. 1 school," Hagan said. "Sometime before football season I plan on committing and I don't know if it is going to be Ohio State or anywhere else, but if I had to say Ohio State would probably be the one. I have been in the contact with the coaches and I am a big fan of Ohio State football and the atmosphere and everything up there."
Hagan has built a strong relationship with co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell, who the senior-to-be has kept in steady contact and informed that he would not be at the camp.
"I talk to him at least once a week," Hagan said. "He wasn't upset that I couldn't participate in the camp because I told him I would make an appearance and show up and he said I could come up any time I wanted to. All I have to do is give him a call."
Hagan has already been to Ohio State on multiple occasions and has come away impressed each time, but he said he still wants to take one more visit before he makes any decisions about his future.
"I just want to show them that I can be a great player and that it is a good thing that they offered me," Hagan said. "I want to be one of the best players to ever come out of there if I go there, and if I put my mind to it I could probably do it. I just want to set a goal for myself to be in the best possible shape that I can."
While Hagan hasn't been secretive about his admiration for Ohio State, the Buckeyes aren't the only school in the race. In fact, Hagan has picked up some other big offers from schools such as Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and N.C. State.
"The other two schools on my list would probably be Wisconsin and Michigan, but Ohio State is the clear cut favorite and I wouldn't be surprised if they were my choice," Hagan said. "My relationship with the Ohio State coaches are 10 times better than they are with any other coach or any other coaching staff.
"I tell (the Ohio State coaches) all the time that I want to commit but it will probably be some time before my season starts," Hagan added. "It is definitely looking like Ohio State is what it is going to be."
Hagan still has things he is working on while pondering a possible commitment, which includes skills when it comes to his on the field game.
"I want to improve my size and I think I have done that a lot," Hagan said. "During the football season I weighed probably around 210 but this year already I am 225 pounds. I can weigh this much weight, but I can also run a 4.3 forty, which is good."
