CMU prospect Wayne Pettus explodes in opener

Senior defensive back Wayne Pettus led his Melvindale Cardinals high school football team to a domination opening season win as they defeated Southgate high school 26-7 on Friday night. Wayne Pettus is a do it all type of player whose skills were on complete display Friday night. As his team's primary offensive option, Pettus routinely made spectacular plays all over the field including a 50 yard reception, a 19 yard touchdown reception, and a dazzling run from scrimmage, which Wayne ended with a leap over two of Southgate's defensive players. Wayne ended the game with almost 100 yards receiving plus a touchdown, on just six catches, and over 40 yards rushing. Defensively, Pettus showcased his outstanding coverage skills as he deflected numerous passes, and did not allow a single reception to any receiver he covered.

Standing 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds, Wayne Pettus may be slightly built, but he is an extremely explosive athlete that is capable of playing multiple positions on the football field. One particular skill set that truly impressed me was his leaping ability. Wayne had two outstanding leaping catches over much bigger defenders, and also the huge run which left all spectators of the game amazed.

After the game I was able to catch up with Wayne for a brief interview.

ChippewaCountry - Wayne how does it feel to start the season off with such a dominating victory over a solid Southgate High school football team?

Pettus- "It feels great. Southgate is a very good team. They have a lot of young talent, but our coaching staff came up with a good game plan to beat them, and my teammates and I were able to execute it tonight on the field."

ChippewaCountry - As a team you guys played really well. Do you think you guys have a shot to go far this season?

Pettus - "Yes I do. I think we have a great team this year, and I'm pretty sure if we can prevent mistakes and continue to execute we can go undefeated."

ChippewaCountry -Have you received an offer from CMU yet?

Pettus- "Yes I have."

ChippewaCountry -What are your thoughts on Central Michigan's football team?

Pettus - "Their pretty good. I didn't get the chance to see any of their games in person last season, but this year hopefully I can come and watch them play."

ChippewaCountry - Have you visited CMU yet?

Pettus - "Yes, I visited on August the second."

ChippewaCountry - Did you enjoy the visit?

Pettus - "Yes I did. Central has a really nice campus and a nice stadium. I could see myself playing there."

ChippewaCountry - What other schools are you currently being recruited by?

Pettus - "Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Purdue and Iowa."

Wayne is an intriguing prospect who maybe flying under the radar now due to his small frame, but if he can perform at such a high level for the rest of the season, teams throughout the country will definitely start to take notice.
