Spartans gain two verbals during UM weekend visits
Earlier today Michigan State University got some great news as Kurtis Drummond of Hubbard High School in Ohio and Keith Mumphery of Vienna High School in Georgia called up Head Coach Mark Dantonio and committed to play for the Greena nd White. The two 3-star recruits give the 2010 recruiting class playmakers on both side of the ball. SpartanMag.com has some quotes from the newest members of the Spartan family.
This afternoon Kurtis Drummond of Hubbard High School in Ohio contacted the Michigan State Coaching Staff and gave a commitment to play for the Green and White. The 6-foot-2, 198-pound Drummond selected the Spartans over a host of other BCS scholarship offers, including schools such as Boston College, Purdue, Michigan, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.
Drummond had long had the Spartan listed as one of his favorites, and this past weekend he was able to see everything the school and football program has to offer on his official visit. The decision to join the Green and White and play for Coach Dantonio was not a difficult one. Drummond informed us that he contacted the staff earlier today to inform them of his college choice.
"I called them this afternoon," he said. "First I spoke with Coach Narduzzi and then I talked with Coach Dantonio. I also spoke with Coach Barnett, they were all really excited. They recruited me to play safety for them."
Drummond is rated the #51 Athlete recruit in the nation by Rivals.com. He is also rated the 28th best prospect in Ohio for the class of 2010. SpartanMag.com asked the 3-star prospect what was it about Michigan State that made it the right place for him?
"It was several things," Drummond said, "I really like the fan support at Michigan State. I also like the family atmosphere and the relationship I have with the coaching staff."
Drummond got to see all three of those aspects in full effect this weekend as the Spartans defeated rival Michigan in overtime, 26-20. The fact that the players and staff were able to handle the end of game adversity and still pull out the victor was impressive.
Drummond is having an outstanding senior year for Hubbard High School. They are currently 5-1 and are looking to making a strong showing in the playoffs. Drummond has made big plays on both sides of the ball for the Eagles and Spartan fans will surely appreciate his hard-hitting style.
Drummond becomes the 4th Ohio player to select the Spartans this year.
Mumphery makes the call.
At nearly the same time Kurtis Drummond was making his pledge to Michigan State, Keith Mumphery of Vienna High School in Georgia was doing the same. Mumphery, who is also rated a 3-star recruit and the #48 Athlete recruit in the nation, selected the Spartans over scholarship offers from Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Wake Forest and Nebraska.
Mumphery contacted SaartanMag.com by via text this evening and gave us some insight into his decision making process.
"I know Michigan State is the place for me because it can make me a better man and take me a step further in life."
Like Drummond, Mumphery was also impressed with the atmosphere in East Lansing this weekend.
"The fans make it what it is there," he siad. "I felt at home and got a real good vibe there. I was very comfortable at Michigan State."
The commitment of Drummond and Mumphery gives Michigan State a total of 14 commitments for teh class of 2010. The combined commitments should also help the Spartan move up the national recruiting rankings.
