Mason suspended indefinitely

North Carolina head football coach Butch Davis has suspended third-year sophomore wide receiver Rashad Mason indefinitely for a violation of team rules, has learned.

The suspension was confirmed Wednesday morning by a UNC official.

Mason's suspension could very well be the end of what has been a disappointing collegiate career for the 6-6 receiver, who came to North Carolina highly-touted as a four-star prospect and the nation's No. 18 wide receiver prospect in the Class of 2007 according to

After redshirting the 2007 season, Mason saw action in just one game last fall, failing to record a catch. He has not played at all in a game thus far in the 2009 season, which means he hasn't yet recorded a reception in a game at the collegiate level.

After being supplanted on the depth chart by freshmen Erik Highsmith and Jheranie Boyd this fall, Mason spent some time at tight end, but now he is not eligible to practice with the team or dress out with the team on game days unless Coach Davis lifts his suspension.

His long-term status with the program is unclear. is your source for: College Football | Football Recruiting | College Basketball | Basketball Recruiting | College Baseball | High School | College Merchandise
