Brown still has the Huskers in the mix

Irving (Texas) Macarthur cornerback Jalen Brown isn't ready to shut any doors in the recruiting process. However, the 6-foot-0, 173-pounder admits that a handful of schools are beginning to stand out from the rest. He hopes to travel to, at least, a couple of colleges this summer. Will he be making a trip to Lincoln, Nebraska?

"I have offers from Texas A&M, Baylor, Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Purdue, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Rice and Iowa State," Brown said. "I'm also getting a lot of recruiting interest from some others, like Oklahoma and LSU."

"I've already visited Texas A&M and Oklahoma this spring and plan on visiting LSU, Notre Dame and maybe Nebraska this summer."

Though he doesn't list the Huskers among his top four schools, Brown said the 'Big Red' isn't far behind.

"I don't have anything set in stone yet," Brown said, "but as of right now I'd say Oklahoma, Notre Dame, LSU and Texas A&M are probably my favorites. I also like Nebraska. They'd be No. 5. They're right there too - just a bit behind the other four."

"I think Nebraska is a really good defensive school. Coach (Bo) Pelini is a great coach, with a great defensive mind. They have a lot of people returning this season so they're probably going to have another great year. If they set up a time, I'll try to get up there this summer and see how it looks."

According to Brown, he had the pleasure of seeing how Oklahoma and Texas A&M looked a few weeks back. He said he came away impressed with both experiences.

"Texas A&M was a really nice environment," Brown said. "I really like the coaches and the players there and I also like how the fans come out to support the team. They have a great atmosphere in College Station."

"I was at the Oklahoma spring game and, even though it was raining, it was great being there. Everybody loves OU up there. I was impressed with the level of fan support at the game. The coaches treated me really well. I also got to talk with some of the players and they seemed pretty cool too."

Brown said he likely won't firm up a college decision until sometime next fall.

"I'll probably make my choice sometime during my senior year," Brown said. "I'd like to take, at least, a couple of official visits. Unless some school just blows me away, I'll try to wait on all of my options."

"It will really come down to how comfortable I am with the school and how comfortable I am with the coaching staff. I want to play for a winning program and I also want to go to a place with strong academics."

Brown recorded 36 tackles, one interception and 13 pass breakups as a junior. Though his team finished the 2009 campaign with a modest 6-5 record, he said he expects a lot of improvement this fall.

"We lost in the first round of the playoffs last year," Brown said. "We're just finishing up spring ball right now and we're looking a lot better. We have a lot of returning starters on the offensive line, the secondary and in the linebacking corp. We should be much improved."

Brown quotes on other favorites

Notre Dame - "I like them a lot. Their coaches seem pretty cool. They have the most championships of any school in NCAA history, so I really like their tradition. I think they're on their way back to the elite."

LSU - "I've always been an LSU fan. I was born in Louisiana and most of my family still lives there."
