The second group of 25 finalists for the 2002 Team One National Showcase have been named. All were selected from the recent Team One Central Showcase in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The 25 players come from eight different states. Texas led the way with eight of the 25 players chosen. Next were Florida and Arkansas (4 each); Louisiana and Mississippi (3 each); and Colorado, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania (1 each).
"Team One Central had a lot of quality players to choose from, especially among the position players," said Team One President Jeff Spelman. "The group of catchers was outstanding along with some quality middle infielders and outfielders. We also chose nine pitchers who really stood out from the rest of the pack."
Spelman said Team One will follow the progress of some of the players who did not make the final-25. "We will take a close look at some of them later in the summer. If they make a jump up they could get an at-large bid."
The Road to Las Vegas
Team One will host four Showcases this summer. Twenty-five finalists have already been named from Team One West. There will be approximately 30-40 finalists named from Team One South, as the event has more participants than the others. In addition to that another 25 will be selected from Team One North at the end of July.
In addition to those players, Team One will also select several dozen at-large candidates in early-August.
Each will be a finalist for the Team One National to be held in mid-November in Las Vegas.
After all the finalists are named, Team One will select the 52 players to compete in the 11th Annual Team One National.
This event has been attended by over 80 first-round picks and more than 40 future Major Leaguers.
The alumni include two players named to this year's Major League All-Star team: pitcher Roy Halladay (Blue Jays) and catcher A.J. Pierzynski (Twins). Other Team One National alumni include Major League starters such as Eric Chavez (A's), Corey Patterson and Mark Prior (Cubs), Pat Burrell (Phillies), Austin Kearns and Chris Reitsma (Reds), Felipe Lopez (Blue Jays), Sean Burroughs (Padres), Jimmy Anderson (Pirates), C.C. Sabathia (Indians) and many others.
