Tackle Tony if you can

The Slant

Trying to tackle five-star stud Tony Hills of Alief Elsik when it comes to his future is about as difficult as it is trying to tackle him on the field.

The nation's top tight end and the top player in the state of Texas just isn't ready to lay all of his cards out on the table when it comes to recruiting - which might things interesting over the next couple of months.

It was highly expected that Hills would be Texas bound and he even hinted early on in the recruiting process that the Longhorns would be his destination. But the more and more Hills said he "enjoys the recruiting process," the more and more he said he's going to take his time.

"I thought it was going to be a once in a lifetime thing, and so far it has," said Hills, who is very soft spoken for a guy that is all of 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds.

"I've gotten to meet a lot of really neat people over the past few months. It seems like I talk to somebody new every night or get a letter from a different person. It's been every bit that I've expected."

And that's why Hills said he's not in a rush to make a decision and is thinking more and more about five official visits and the teams that he might take a long look at.

While he's not heavy on the details with his teams, he's thrown around top-level squads like Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, LSU, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Florida and Texas Tech for the past few weeks.

"It's confusing," he said.

"One minute I'm into teams like Texas, LSU, Colorado and a few others, and then other minute I get to thinking about laces like Tennessee, Oklahoma and Florida. I've got other things on my mind right now."

Other things like helping Elsik make a run at a state championship and doing everything he can to improve on his all-district honors that he earned as a junior.

"It's all about the team right now," he said. "The coaches know that."
