Checking in with Savage

Back in February, Smackover (Ark.) junior Jeff Savage took a visit to Starkville and attended Mississippi State's initial junior day. This past weekend, the 6-foot-3 and 255-pound defensive lineman checked out another Bulldogs' program.

"I went to Louisiana Tech's junior day and it was a good visit," said Savage. "It was my first time going down there and they are doing a total revamp of their facilities. They are improving all of their athletic facilities and it looked nice."

While Savage has not visited many schools of late, that will change in the near future.

"That was my first trip in awhile but I am going to start things back up pretty soon," said Savage. "I am going to Mississippi State this weekend and then I am going to try to make it to Tulsa the following weekend. Then I am supposed to go to Arkansas, too, pretty soon and I am going to Arkansas State on May 7th. So it is starting to heat up a bit and after these visits it will be close to summer camps. I know I am going to camps at Mississippi State, Arkansas, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas State and a Nike combine, too."

Savage is currently drawing interest from the schools mentioned above and said he was also starting to hear from some new schools.

"Louisiana Tech started talking to me recently and that is why I went and checked them out," said Savage. "Then I am also getting interest now from Stanford and Clemson and those are the latest ones to show interest."

Concerning Mississippi State, Savage said he stays in regular contact with their staff, which includes his cousin Chris Wilson who is MSU's defensive coordinator.

"Things are still going good with Mississippi State," said Savage. "I get letters from them all the time and I talk to Coach Melvin Smith every week. I also talk to Chris Wilson a lot but that happens anyway. I still like them a lot and I have a good relationship with their staff."

Along with his future campus visits, Savage is eying his own spring drills. Last year as a junior, Savage collected 61 tackles, including 17 tackles for loss and 11 sacks.

"We start up in a month or so," said Savage. "Since we haven't been in contact for some time, I want to make sure I get my game back and that I am not rusty. I want to carry over my work in the weight room to the field and try to prove myself all over again."
