It was crisp, business like practice for the Bruins on Thursday. They looked like a team that is eager to get back on the field and play a game. They left the practice field with their heads high and looked ready to go. UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel met the the media after practice.
Neuheisel: "Good practice, it has been a good week. It is always cathartic to be able to get back out and play and I know we are looking forward to that. Still lots to do before the game at 7:00 o'clock on Saturday Night and we will take advantage of our time between now and then to repair and prepare well so that we can play our best and hopefully get out first win of the season and get this thing going, but I have been pleased with the amount of effort and the amount of work and we will be excited to get out under the lights and in front of home crowd. Looking forward to it."
Neuheisel: "Probably, I'm not going to be held down to that, but probably given the...but Kevin Prince will be available and we will hopefully get him in there."
Is Kevin's throwing better?
Neuheisel: "Kevin is fine. He is resting it, but he's fine. He could of ripped it around today and we are just giving it another 24 hours and we will throw a little bit tomorrow then we will be ready to go on Saturday."
Will you go in with kind of a rotation in mind or will it kind of be dictated by situation?
Neuheisel: "I really didn't have a rotation in mind for the first game. I was of the mind they both deserve to play and I was going to make sure both did, but I didn't have any idea of how it was going to go because I couldn't predict the game and I wouldn't do that in this particular instance either."
Did you get the response that you were hoping for after yesterday's practice?
Neuheisel: "Yeah, we got it exactly right. You know as I looked at film yesterday, I might have ben the one who was most frustrated rather than them. I was just frustrated with some off sides penalties at the end of practice.
"When I watched tape the team was actually playing very well. Other than a couple of assignment gaffs at the end with respect to the snap count. It is important that they know we as coaches are only trying to pull the very best out of all of them and believe wholeheartedly in their character and believe that this can be a terrific season and regardless of how things went in game one.
"We are looking forward to game two and moving on from there."
Your kicking situation, you are comfortable with keeping things as they were last week?
Neuheisel: "I don't have a lot of options. That is not to say that I'm not comfortable, but Joe Roberts is hurt. So Kip Smith has worked hard and has looked good. There were a couple of balls that got away and weren't where we want, but I have full confidence in Kip that he can find it. He's a very talented young man and he just has to trust that we have confidence in him and trust himself and I think good things will end up happening for him and for us."
Neuheisel: "You saw, we worked Jeff out and it wasn't good. I mean, and you risk losing some other portions of what is good in terms of kickoffs and punts. I have nothing but full confidence in Jeff and I just have to believe that Kip is going to find the answers and I'm excited for him to have another chance to do so."
Is there anything from Brehaut that you didn't see that keeps you from giving him that nod?
Neuheisel: "No, I just want to keep my cards close to my vest, but I think that Richard has been terrific and Richard will certainly play on Saturday Night."
