Florida State defensive end Brandon Jenkins is out for the season with a Lisfranc injury to his left foot, the school confirmed late Monday night.
CBS Sports first reported the news of Jenkins' injury on Monday.
Jenkins, a two-time All-ACC defensive end, injured the foot during the first half of FSU's 69-3 win over Murray State on Saturday.
"After receiving information late in the afternoon following an MRI and a weight bearing X-Ray and also awaiting to talk to Brandon Jenkins and his mother, it was determined that Brandon will miss the 2012 season with a Lisfranc injury," FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said in the school's release.
"Brandon is not only a tremendous player, but a great person, teammate and leader that we will miss. I know he'll bounce back and recover to continue a great career," he said.
The Lisfranc injury is a midfoot injury that can require surgery and several months to heal
The FSU training staff surrounded Jenkins on the sideline as they examined his foot, then brought over crutches for him to use to get to the locker room before halftime. He quickly tossed the crutches aside and walked under his own power, but did not return to the game.
Fisher said after the game that the X-rays on his foot were negative and it was initially believed to be a foot contusion. However, during his news conference on Monday Fisher said that Jenkins would undergo an MRI on the injury.
Jenkins was not out at practice during the portion open to the media on Monday afternoon.
Jenkins posted 41 tackles and eight sacks as a junior last season and considered leaving FSU for the NFL Draft this offseason. Jenkins, a Tallahassee native, had a change of heart and opted to return to FSU. He had totaled 116 tackles including 36 1/2 for loss and 21.5 sacks through his first three seasons. Entering the 2012 campaign, Jenkins was on the Bednarik (top defender), Camp (top player) and Nagurski (top defender) Award watch lists
Jenkins has not used a redshirt during his college career and could be in line for a medical redshirt if he misses the season and decided to stay at FSU for another year. Jenkins is rated as the No. 44 overall player, the No. 4 outside linebacker prospect in the 2013 NFL Draft class and a projected second round selection by NFLDraftScout.com.
