Edwards picks WKU
Two-star Avon (Ind.) wide receiver Jalen Edwards knew more college offers were headed his way.
Though he still plans on taking visits, the incoming offers didn't hold Edwards back from making his college commitment yesterday to WKU.
"Western Kentucky was the first school to offer me," Edwards said. "So I've always felt comfortable talking to them."
The 5-foot-11 wideout chose WKU over offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, and Eastern Illinois, with several BCS schools showing strong interest.
"Coach Mas (Karl Maslowski), I've felt real comfortable talking to him," Edwards said. "Coach Taggart is awesome too, I really like the offense they have.
"I know Taggart signed a new contract last year, I feel comfortable knowing that he's going to be there for my college career."
Edwards said he broke the big news first to Maslowski.
"I called Coach Mas to tell him I was committing to Western Kentucky," he said.
"Then I called Coach Taggart, we had a good conversation, and he welcomed me into the Hilltopper family."
While Edwards now has a family away from home at WKU, he said it was important to have his family at home's support in his decision.
"My family, they love Western Kentucky," the Avon standout said. "My dad loves the way Coach Taggart runs things."
Goals for senior year
With his college commitment out of the way, Edwards is ready to focus on the rest of his senior season.
"I've got a few individual goals, like school records in mind," he said. "But I just want to help the team win in the end, I'll do anything to help us win."
The two-star wide receiver said he'll still probably make some college visits before the year is over.
"I'll probably be going up to Ball State next weekend," Edwards said. "Just to talk to their coaches a bit."
"Other than that, I'll probably go to Louisville for a game, and maybe a couple of IU (Indiana) games. But after that, I'll be sticking with Western Kentucky."
Edwards is the No. 13 commitment in WKU's 2013 recruiting class, joining high three-star OL Joe Fennell, three-star OL Chris Huhn, two-star OL Justin Martinez, and unevaluated runningback Dontravious Wilson on the offense side of the ball.
WKU has now totaled 3 three-star verbal commitments and 6 two-star verbal commitments in the Class of 2013, with 4 players still waiting on evaluations.
