Martin eying Kansas, Washington State

Chris Martin's Dec. 14 trip to Lawrence, Kan., will represent his first time on the University of Kansas campus. All of the structures will be new to him. New stadium, new classrooms, new faculties. That's not to say there won't be some tones of home, though. Martin, a defensive end who played at Florida in 2011, will see his share of familiar faces.

There's something to be said for comfort when it comes to recruiting. And whatever that something is, it can be applied to Kansas in the case of Martin.

"I'm real familiar with Coach (Charlie) Weis from Notre Dame and also when he was at Florida. I spent my whole year at Florida with Scott Holsopple, the strength and condoning coach at KU. I know what my body is going to look like under Coach Holsopple. And that's not anything bad."

Martin's upcoming visit to Kansas comes on the heels of his trip to Washington State. Both schools remain in the running to land his commitment. The draw of KU is comfort, but it's the promise of things to come that's pulling him toward Pullman.

"I loved Washington State," Martin said. "You can sense a new culture coming about with Coach (Mike) Leach up there. It would be a good place to finish up my college career. I can see myself up there with Coach Leach. "

Syracuse also remains a player in Martin's recruitment. As does San Diego State. So while the Huskies and Jayhawks seem to be the frontrunners to secure his services, Martin insists that's not the case.

"There's no favorite now, not yet," he said. "I'm not sure on other visits. I just might pick after I get back from KU. I'm hoping to have it done by the end of this month. I don't want to let it roll on into January. I'm a mid-year grad, so I need to be ready. "

Martin, who committed to Cal out of high school before transferring, is said to have had numerous off-field issues during his short time at Florida. Gainesville police cited him for possessing less than 20 grams of marijuana last January. Rivals.com ranked him as the No. 18 prospect in America as a high school senior.

Martin recorded 61 tackles and 4.5 sacks at City College of San Francisco this season. He also broke up six passes and recovered a fumble.
