'Noles lead for Pensacola cornerback

Although Florida State will not lose a starting cornerback after this season it is still a position of need. The 'Noles did not bring in a player at this position with the 2002 class and Stanford Samuels and Rufus Brown, the current starters, will be seniors in 2003. Also, backup Malcolm Tatum will use up his eligibility after this season. The Garnet and Gold appear to be in pretty good shape with top rated corners like Antonio Cromartie, Chijioke Onyenegecha, Tarell Brown, Kenny Scott and Ryan Gilliam, who are all listing FSU at or near the top of their list.

Jhermaine McAroy
Even with all those five and four-star recruits eyeing the 'Noles, one sleeper prospect has really caught the eyes of the Seminole coaches. Shortly after attending FSU's summer camp Pensacola Senior's Jhermaine McAroy received a scholarship offer. Defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Mickey Andrews has continued to aggressively recruit the tall cornerback. In fact, coach Andrews paid an in-home visit to McAroy on Monday.

"Coach Mickey Andrews himself came down," McAroy told Warchant.com. "It was an honor and there is no feeling like it. There aren't any words to describe it. I can't believe he was actually here in my house sitting on my couch."

In addition to Andrews for FSU, Dave Roberts from South Carolina stopped by on Monday.

The 6'2", 175-pound corner recently scheduled official visits with South Carolina (1/17) and Florida State (1/31). Clemson is scheduled for an in-home visit this week and he expects to schedule his visit with the Tigers then. He also plans on visiting LSU.

Those schools make up his current top four. McAroy says the official visits at will determine where he wants to play his college ball, but admitted he does one slight favorite.

"Out of those it would be FSU then it would be a tie between South Carolina, LSU, and Clemson," said McAroy.

Although he didn't get to see it in person, McAroy watching the Seminoles defeat the Gators 31-14 last Saturday.

"I thought it was awesome," he said. "It was great. I've been cheering for Florida State since I was four."

McAroy's senior season came to an end a week and a half ago when his Pensacola Senior team fell to Lake City Columbia in the second round of the 4A playoffs. He finished the year racking up 44 tackles with three interceptions. Even more impressive is that he only surrendered six catches all season. Much of that is because teams just decided to shut down their passing game when he was around.

"They stopped throwing at me," said McAroy. "So I could get action our coach would put me on their go-to guy, the person they throw the ball to, but their job before the game was to try to take me out of the game so they would never throw the ball. It was very, very boring."

The Rivals100.com No. 36 rated cornerback carries near a 3.0 GPA but still needs a qualifying test score. He was one point short of the necessary score on the ACT on his last try and will re-take it on December 14th.

Look for McAroy to make his decision at or near signing day.
