Lester Cotton had plenty of competition on Sunday, but still earned MVP honors among offensive linemen.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The 2014 Rivals Camp Series Presented by Under Armour landed in Birmingham on Sunday amidst threatening skies, but the weather held off and over 230 elite athletes showed off their skills at Hoover High School.
As expected, five-star defensive tackle Daron Payne and four-star guard Lester Cotton squared off for some intense one-on-ones. They may continue this rivalry in college, as Cotton has committted to Alabama and the Tide is one of several schools pursuing Payne. Both Payne and Cotton walked away with their respective positional MVP awards and earned invites to the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge Presented by Under Armour in June. Offensive lineman Tyler Carr was also invited to the Five-Star Challenge after what was one of the top OL-DL camps Rivals has seen in the two years of the RCS.
The top quarterback MVP was Gardner Minshew, a three-star dual-threat QB from Brandon, Miss., who has yet to garner a BCS offer but has several SEC schools following his progress.
Four-star running back Nick Gibson earned MVP honors, showing why analysts have been high on his skill set for some time.
The Rivals Camp Series turns to Florida next weekend, with elite players competing in Orlando on Saturday, Mar. 22 and in Miami on Sunday, Mar. 23. Stay tuned for Rivals.com this week as we continue to analyze this weekend's camps and preview next week's action in Florida.
