Standout JUCO Athlete likes Alabama

The top athlete in the Mississippi junior college ranks, Larry Kendrick from Pearl River Community College in Poplarville (Miss.), enjoyed a standout sophomore campaign and is one of the nation's more highly sought after Juco prospects.

During his sophomore campaign Kendrick did it all.

The 6-foot, 205-pound athlete caught 25 passes for 697 yards and nine touchdowns from the wide receiver position.

He was equally effective on the defensive side of the football and on special teams, picking off nine passes for 189 return yards and two touchdowns as the Pearl River starting safety. He also chipped in 200 punt return yards on 12 attempts.

Kendrick led the MACJC in receiving yards, interceptions and scoring. For his efforts he earned All-Region XXIII and 1st team MACJC All-State honors. He was named the league's MVP.

Alabama has offered Kendrick and the chance to see the field early has the Tide near the top of his list.

"Alabama is coming off probation and they need some playmakers and that's what I am. I'm just looking for the opportunity to play early," Kendrick said. "They are losing a lot of wide receivers and they need help in the secondary so I'm giving them a strong look."

"Also, I know it's a good school and they have a good program. They struggled this year but that just tells me that I might be able to step in and help them out earlier that I could somewhere else."

Tide assistant Sparky Woods is recruiting Kendrick for Alabama.

"I really like Coach Woods. He's been very straight-up and honest with me so far," Kendrick said. "We get along well and he's told me a lot of great things about Alabama so I plan to take one of my visits there."

Kendrick is currently in the process of setting up his official visits and while he currently is open, he did indicate that a few schools have stood out from the rest.

"Beside Alabama, I also like Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Auburn," Kendrick said. "All four of those have some of the things I'm looking for in a college. Also they all need help at my position and they are good programs."

"I'm going to set up my visits soon and those schools will probably receive visits. I don't feel rushed to commitment but if I find the right place then I will go ahead and make my decision."

Kendrick boasts a 340-pound bench press, 500-squat and runs the 40 in the 4.5-4.6 range.
