Big Byrd Receives Offer No. 18

Duke offered North Augusta, S.C., two-way star C.J. Byrd on Friday. It was scholarship offer No. 18 for the WR and FS who is nicknamed "Big Byrd."

"This offer was very important for Duke because C.J and his parents place a high value on academics," North Augusta assistant Drew Hummel said. "We asked his family a few weeks ago if there any other schools out there they wanted to look at. They mentioned a few academic schools, and Duke specifically.

"From a football standpoint, Duke is also doing well. They have a new head coach (Ted Roof) and beat Georgia Tech last year, It's definitely a program on the rise. C.J. and his family are going to visit Duke this spring, just like they will with about every school in the Southeast area that has offered."

"Big Byrd" has already met college entrance requirements with a 3.1 grade point average and 890 score on the SAT.

"I'm not satisified with my grades or my SAT," Byrd said. "I'm working hard in school to pull my grades up and I have taken the SAT again. My goal is to score 1,050 or higher. Academics are critical because no one can play football forever."

"Big Byrd" has offers from Oklahoma, Georgia, LSU, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Florida, Auburn, South Carolina, Ole Miss and North Carolina.

Byrd will make an unofficial visit to Georgia on Saturday and is trying to work out a trip to Florida next week during spring break.
