North Augusta Athlete Has 23 Offers

North Augusta's C.J. Byrd and Conway's Eric Huggins are two of the nation's most heavily recruited players:
On Thursday, SCVarsity reported that Huggins has 23 offers, with the latest being from Arkansas; On Friday, the player nicknamed "Big Byrd" also got offer No. 23 -- this one from the University of Michigan.

"Eric is a great player and he definitely deserves everything he is getting," Byrd said. "I had the chance to meet him at Clemson last month. I haven't seen his film yet on Rivals.com, but I heard it was good.

"There have been some people who say that Eric and I are in some type of 'competition' to see who can get the most scholarship offers. I laugh when I hear that. Nothing can be further from the truth from my standpoint, and I am sure Eric feels the same way. That's just silly.

"I am very happy when I hear about guys like Eric, his teammate (Hivera Green), Rendrick Taylor and Mike Davis get more offers each week. It only makes our state look better. We have some great high school football in South Carolina and it doesn't always get its due."

"Big Byrd's" offer from Michigan continues the Big Ten's big presence at North Augusta, which has had a player sign with a conference school each of the last three years: Richie Williams (Iowa) in 2002, Frayne Abernathy (Northwestern) in 2003 and Andre Young (Illinois) this past February.

"Michigan has a great tradition, great academics and probably the best-looking helmets in college football," Byrd said. "It would be fun to go to a college where I could play against a lot of my high school buddies. We've got them spread all over the place."

"Big Byrd's" other offers are from Florida State, Florida, LSU, Oklahoma, Georgia, Southern Cal, Tennessee, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Duke, North Carolina, Clemson, Illinois, Ole Miss, Penn State, Vanderbilt, Kentucky and South Carolina.

For the first time in five weeks, "Big Byrd" will not be visiting a college this weekend. He is going to the prom at North Augusta.
