North Augusta's Byrd Gets 27th and 28th

North Augusta’s C.J. Byrd, who has been offered by N.C. State and Army to bring his scholarship total to 28, had a steady flow of visitors on Thursday.

Assistant coaches from Michigan, Virginia, Auburn, and Army stopped by the school to speak with the player nicknamed “Big Byrd.”

“It has been a steady flow of coaches and this is the way we expect it to be until the end of school,” North Augusta assistant Drew Hummel said. “It’s fun meeting all the coaches from all over country. They all love CJ and want to sign him very badly.”

Both N.C. State and Army have ties to North Augusta: Former N.C. State coach Dick Sheridan is a native of North Augusta, and current North Augusta senior offensive lineman Evan Williams signed with Army this past February.

“C.J.’s parents were very happy with the offer from Army because Westpoint and the other military academies have extremely high standards,” Hummel said. “An offer from Army means you are doing some good things academically.”

Georgia Southern stopped by the school on Thursday also to scout North Augusta WR Myles Potter and OL Jonathan Ponto. Sophomore LB Marcus Jackson, who is both the team’s fastest and strongest all-around player, has also generated attention.

“The scouts are here to primarily see CJ, but they know we have other players after seeing us have 32 players sign scholarships over the last three years,” Hummel said.

Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer is scheduled to visit North Augusta on May 6. The team will go through spring drills from May 10-24.
