On June 26th on the sprawling campus grounds of Redondo Union HS, athletes from 12 local schools competed in various events ranging from the coveted QB Challenge to the Strong Man Competition, as well as the long jump and 40-yard dash. Some of the schools participating were Westchester HS, South Torrance, Inglewood, Serra, North Torrance, Mira Costa, Redondo, El Segundo, Long Beach Wilson, Palos Verdes, St Francis, West Torrance and Chadwick.
In the QB Challenge, the top competitors were Kyle Kazarian of LB Wilson, N.Torrance's Lyle Moeva--who went on to eventually win--and Redondo's Jordan Tusieseina.Tristan Patin of Serra won the 40 with 4.59. Westchester's Aaron Anthony won the long jump with a mark of 38.9. In a lifting contest, Kevin Ellison (Redondo) edged South's Nick Ekbutoni, although both had 24 repetitions of 185 lbs.
The Strong Man event was an amazing obstacle course which included weaving between pylons, flipping a 250-lb. tire, carrying pairs of 100-lb. dumbbells, tossing a medicine ball, and pulling a weighted sled. Mira Costa beat Redondo for to win that event. There were also scrimmages. It was a very well-orchestrated event, sponsored by Sportsworld and overseen by Redondo Head Coach Gene Simon. Although exhausted just from watching, we interviewed a number of the participants, who, not surprisingly, are also up and coming high school recruits.
