The recruiting process may soon be over for Marquez Herrod. The talented defensive end out of Escondido, CA (San Pascual High School) appears close to making a verbal commitment.
Although his senior season is just beginning, Herrod is close to choosing his collegiate destination. "I'm probably going to make a decision this week," he stated. According to Herrod, he has narrowed his choices down to Utah, Oregon St. and UCLA. Herrod has officially visited Utah and made unofficial visits to both UCLA and Arizona.
On an official visit to Salt Lake City last weekend, Herrod watched the Utes pummel in-state rival Utah State. During his visit, Utah made quite an impression on the senior. "[Utah has a] Beautiful, beautiful campus," Herrod stated. "I mean the whole game atmosphere was just amazing. I loved it."
Herrod was also impressed with Utah's home crowd inside Rice Eccles Olympic Stadium, particularly the MUSS [student section]. "The fan support was just amazing," he explained. "The crowd was up on its feet cheering. That was a great thing to see."
Herrod also had compliments for Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, who is no stranger to the California recruiting wars, having recruited in California as an assistant coach for the Utes. "[Coach Whittingham is] a very nice guy, a really up front tell you how it is kind of guy, and I like that in a coach," he said.
Herrod's senior season started off in good form, as San Pascual defeated Mt. Carmel 44-10 in the first game of the season. For the game, Herrod turned in an outstanding performance, recording 2 sacks, 5 hurries, and a fumble recovery in the win.
At 6-foot-3, 220-pounds, Herrod brings speed and quickness to the defensive end position. His 4.65 second 40-yard dash time is incredibly fast for a defensive lineman. "I have a lot of speed and I run places," he stated. "I don't just sit back when I see a play going away. I run. I move. That's the greatest asset I've had in high school, and that's what I will bring to the table in college."
