Memphis junior can do it all

One of the top players in the Southeast for the class of 2007 figures to be versatile Memphis (Tenn.) Woodale athlete Roderick Davis.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder projects as a wide receiver or kickoff returner at the next level and with good reason, he caught 39 passes for 775 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2005 and totaled 609 kickoff return yards. He is talented enough, however, to play in the defensive secondary if needed. He had 15 pass break-ups his junior year.

"I am a good all-around player," he said. "I play because it's fun."

Having fun has gotten Davis early attention from several Division I-A programs. He grew up following Alabama and Tennessee, and the Tide and Vols, along with Texas Tech, Michigan State, UCLA and Ole Miss make up his early list.

Davis told Rivals.com what he liked about his early list of schools.

Tennessee: "I like Tennessee because I like how their defense is, basically."

Texas Tech: "80 percent of their offense is passing the football and since I am a wide receiver that is appealing to me."

Michigan State: "I just like them because I see how they play on TV."

UCLA: "It would be nice to go to UCLA just to get away from where I am at."

Ole Miss: "I have seen their depth chart and right now they don't have very many wide receivers."

Of all the college football games Davis watched on TV during the fall, one stood out the most.

"It had to be the USC-Notre Dame game," he said. "The atmosphere was great and I liked the way Notre Dame stuck in there the whole time."

Davis plans to attend camps at Auburn, Alabama, Ole Miss, Oklahoma or Vanderbilt and the NIKE camp. He also will travel to the Hoover (Ala.) 7-on-7 tournament with his teammates in July.
