Hebron suspended for 2007

Local media in Athens is reporting that redshirt freshman Akeem Hebron has been suspended through fall semester, i.e., the 2007 football season, following his second alcohol related arrest this spring.

The Athens Banner-Herald obtained a copy of "an informal resolution" signed by Hebron under the Open Records law.

Marc Weiszer, the paper's sports reporter who covers UGA football, writes that Hebron will be eligible to return to UGA next spring, but will remain on probation until December 2009.

Sources in Athens say that head coach Mark Richt has been in contact with the coaching staff at Georgia Military College about the possibility of Hebron transferring to the junior college for a year to get his act together.

A move such as this could be contingent on whether the current suspension, two games, and any additional suspensions for the second arrest, would apply to the 2007 season or if he would have to sit out those game if he returns for 2008.

Regardless, Hebron is out of the mix for 2007 and suddenly the Bulldogs find themselves considerably thinner at a position that looked to have adequate depth heading into spring camp.

Marcus Washington, who missed spring rehabbing from surgery, may not be ready until several months from now and it is not out of the question that he redshirts in 2007.

Georgia lost three of their top linebackers, Tony Taylor, Jarvis Jackson, and Danny Verdun to graduating from the 2006 squad, leaving senior Brandon Miller with the lion's share of experience. The Bulldogs now look to junior Dannell Ellerbe, sophomore Darius Dewberry, redshirt freshmen Akeem Dent and Darryl Gamble, and incoming freshmen Rennie Curran and Charles White, to fill the ranks this fall.
