While the Class of 2008 isn't a strong top to bottom as the Class of 2007, the top 10 prospects in the state of South Carolina in this year's cycle are as strong as ever. The first release of the Rivals.com South Carolina top 20 for the class of 2008 is loaded at the top.
For the first time in nearly a decade, the Palmetto State has two prospects among the nation's top 10, including Summerville wide receiver A.J. Green and Bamberg-Erhardt defensive end DaQuan Bowers. Both blockbuster prospects made early commitments. Green is heading to Georgia while Bowers will be staying in-state and heading to longtime favorite Clemson.
Rivals100 defensive end Robert Quinn from North Charleston Fort Dorchester (ironically Summerville's arch rival) continues the legacy of that program producing elite talent. Last year, the school produced five-star defensive end Carlos Dunlap, who signed with Florida. The previous cycle, four-star Clemson cornerback prospect Byron Maxwell came from the school.
The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Quinn has offers from multiple major programs in the Southeast, including Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, Florida State and both in-state schools.
Chester's Charles Whitlock is an explosive athlete who projects as a lockdown cornerback in college. The 5-foot-10, 172-pounder plays quarterback for his high school team. Whitlock's offer list is extremely impressive.
Columbia A.C. Flora offensive guard prospect Kenneth Page is one of the top prospects at his position in the Southeast. He first made a name for himself at the Clemson NIKE Camp last April when he impressed onlookers as a rising junior. Page has a slew of scholarship offers from most of the major programs from around the country.
Myrtle Beach linebacker Bruce Taylor, Blythewood wide receiver Marquan Jones, Moncks Corner Berkeley running back Andre Ellington, Pelion offensive guard Dalton Freeman and Loris linebacker Jonathan Willard round out the top 10. Taylor is committed to Virginia Tech while Jones and Ellington are committed to Clemson. The Tigers also are in excellent shape to land Freeman and Willard.
In this year's class, Clemson is in excellent shape to emerge with a clear victory in the battle to sign the state's top talent.
