PINEHURST, N.C. – Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan was named the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason player of the year Wednesday in voting by media attending the conference's Media Days at the Pinehurst Resort.
Ryan, the first-team all-conference quarterback last season, received 31 votes in the Player of the Year voting. Virginia Tech running back Branden Ore finished second with 21 votes.
The most notable omission from the team may have been Georgia Tech's Durant Brooks, who failed to make it despite having the second-highest 2006 punting average of any returning player. Wake Forest junior Sam Swank, a Rivals.com first-team All-America kicker last year, made the team as a kicker and punter.
Clemson's talented backfield tandem of James Davis and C.J. Spiller also were passed over in favor of Ore and Georgia Tech's Tashard Choice, who led the conference in rushing last year.
