Hylton linebacker White makes commitment

It's a good thing Danzel White has a discerning eye. Without it, he would have missed an important letter he received a few weeks ago from Towson University.

The Tigers had not been in touch with the Hylton linebacker since coming down to the school during the spring evaluation period. Nor had they bombarded him with recruiting mail.

So when a letter came to White one day, he broke tradition and opened it rather than toss it on the pile with all the other standard-issue recruiting mail he'd received.

It was a smart move. The Division I-AA Tigers had written to offer White a full football scholarship.

"It was surprising," White said.

That got the ball rolling. White visited the campus last Wednesday with Hylton head football coach Lou Sorrentino. Then White's father checked out the campus online Thursday.

After weighing everything out and getting input, White called Towson Friday and told them he was accepting their offer.

Other schools, including James Madison and the Virginia Military Institute, had shown more interest in White than Towson, but they had not made an offer.

Impressed with the Tigers' facilities and the school's proximity to home, White decided to forgo waiting out any other possible offers, even from Division I schools, to commit to Towson.

Although he cannot sign his national letter-of-intent until February of 2008, White saw no reason to delay his decision.

"I was really blown away by my visit," White said.

Towson has shown plenty of interest in Hylton players. The Tigers recruited lineman Leo Grassilli last season and tight end Eric Martin this season.

Both players are going elsewhere, Grassilli (class of 2007) to San Diego State and Martin (class of 2008) to Virginia Tech, but that has not stopped the program from going after Hylton players.

Towson, which went 7-4 last season, is ranked 17th in Street & Smith's Division I-AA preseason poll.

"It's a real good offer early," Sorrentino said. "He could attach a face and people to the school. He liked everything about it."

With the decision now made, White, an all-district performer on defense last season, said he could focus on the upcoming season.

And as for the letter from Towson?

"That's definitely in a separate file," White said.
