Sophomore D.J. Augustin (Texas) and freshman Bill Walker (Kansas State) have been chosen as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week for Dec. 3-9, in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. Both players capture their first honor of the season. It is the fifth career weekly recognition for Augustin after he won rookie accolades four times a year ago.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK D.J. Augustin, Texas, G, So., 6-0, 180, New Orleans, La./Brother Martin Augustin averaged 23.5 points and 8.5 assists while leading the Longhorns to two victories. He posted a game-high 29 points with 10 assists and just three turnovers in an 88-72 home victory over North Texas. On Saturday, the sophomore guard followed with 18 points, seven assists and no turnovers in an 80-54 tally at Rice. Augustin shot 53.8 percent (14-of-26) in the two games, plus 17-of-20 (.850) from the free throw line. He is averaging 19.0 points and 7.0 assists this season, while shooting 55.0 percent from the floor, 48.8 percent from 3-point range and 83.8 percent from the charity stripe.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Bill Walker, Kansas State, F, Fr., 6-6, 220, Huntington, W. Va./North College Hill [Ohio] Walker averaged 22.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Wildcats. He set or tied career-highs in nine categories in an 82-75 win over previously unbeaten California on Sunday. The freshman forward had a career-high 30 points with a career-best tying 10 rebounds. He also recorded four steals and two assists in 35 minutes. Earlier in the week he tallied 14 points in a 68-59 loss to Notre Dame at the Jimmy V. Classic in New York City. Walker has scored in double digits in six of seven outings this season. He is second on the team in scoring (14.0) and rebounding (6.7) and is tied for the team lead with 14 steals.
