Remember the name Kevin Phillip, because after the season he had, the CHSAA will. The 6-foot-7 forward out of Bishop Loughlin has a chance to do some great things this year for head coach, Khalid Green.
A year ago, Phillips had to share time with freshman, Jayvaughn Pinkston and fellow big man Dan Jennings. A tandem that formed a long and athletic frontline. While Pinkston is still around, Jennings is doing a year at Oak Hill Academy, which means more responsibility for Phillips. We had a chance to watch him over the summer and a little bit in the fall and there have been improvements in Phillips' game.
For one, he's a little bit stronger and has more muscle tone to his body. Look for that to be a big asset for him this season, as he should look to take more contact on the offensive end and not relegate to just being a wing player. In fact, when we saw him at the Sullivan Games in September he spent most of his time in the paint attacking the basket.
Look for him to continue that this season as his offense was always the knock on him. You know what you're going to get on the defensive end with block shots and rebounds.
Drexel University knows what they'll be getting as well as Phillips signed a letter of intent to suit up for the Dragons next season.
Plays hard defense. Phillips might not have the name as some of the other CHSAA big men, but he plays as tough a defense as anyone you'll find. He can block shots, grab rebounds and run the floor, more times than not beating guys his size down the floor.
Right now, his defense is far ahead of his offense. He has some moves around the basket, but some fine-tuning can still be done. If he continues to work on his jump shot, that could be something that should set him a part from other guys his size in the future.
