Wazzu Sweeps Huskies

If the 2007-08 athletic year has had one theme for Washington State University sports programs, it has been beating the Huskies. The Wazzu track and field teams added on to that theme last weekend as they became the latest Cougar programs to take down the Dawgs, with the the women doing it in dominating style and the men slipping by with a few points to spare. The women's 69-point victory was their 11th in the past 12 years while the men's 23-point win was their first in four years.

Leading the way for the women was senior tosser McKenzie Garberg, who broke her own school record with a 62.42-meter [204-9] hammer toss. Sophomore sprinter Princess joy Griffey swept the sprints with wins in the 100 and 200 meters while senior Isley Gonzalez won the 3000 meters and freshman Candace Missouri easily won the long jump.

On the men's side, the big heroes were mostly of the usually unsung variety. Sophomores Luke Lemenager and Dominic Smargiassi won the 800 and 3000 meters, respectively to snag crucial points for the Cougars while football offensive Joe Eppele was chucking in some points in the hammer. All that accompanied the usual scoring from freshman Jeshua Anderson and his teammates, Robert Williams, Justin Woods and Rickey Moody along with help from Phil MacArthur [hammer] and Jon Jeffreys [javelin].

Wazzu will compete next at the Pac-10 championships this weekend in Tempe.
