More Cougars Going To NCAA Championships

In what has become a predictable parade of numbers, Washington State University freshman track and field sensation Jeshua Anderson set and reset another set of numerals in helping to lead a contingent of Cougars at the NCAA West regional in Northridge, California to the NCAA Championships next week in Des Moines, Iowa.

Running in front of family and friends, Anderson ripped off a 49.41 personal-best in the 400-meter hurdles - setting an NCAA West regional meet record [formerly 49.64, set by UCLA's Brandon Johnson in 2004], lowering his freshman school record and notching the school's second fastest-ever time in the event - a mere .14 off the 49.27 record set by Boyd Gittins at altitude at South Lake Tahoe in 1968. Anderson qualified for his inaugural trip to the NCAA Championships where he will be joined by fellow 400-meter hurdler Barry Leavitt, who finished third in 50.44 - a personal best and seventh-best time in Cougar history. Anderson and Leavitt also teamed up with junior Justin Woods and sophomore Reny Follett to finish third in the 4x400 relay and earn a trip to the NCAA Championships.

Meanwhile, on the women's side, also making their first visits to the NCAA championship meet will be Swedish steeplechaser - the two-time reigning Pac-10 steeplechase queen - who finished fifth in her event, but the Cougar junior reset her own school record at 10:14.29, sophomore 400-meter hurdler Lorraine King, who finished second in 58.67, and yet another freshman sensation - javelin tosser Marissa Tschida - finished fourth with a toss of 48.25 meters [158-4].

In addition, freshman high jumper Ebba Jungmark - the reigning NCAA indoor champ - and redshirt frosh 800-meter runner Anna Layman, who both finished sixth in their events, are both expected to make the championship meet as at-large entrants.
