Heading into the off-season, offensive guard Chris Atchison knew that there were certain areas of his game that he could still develop. In fact, Atchison listened to the feedback that he received from others to find out exactly what he needed to concentrate on.
"Several college coaches told me that I needed to work on finishing blocks," said the DeSoto senior. "So the offensive line coach helped me with different techniques and establishing blocks better.
"I believe that I've gotten better and will be able to finish blocks like the colleges want me to so I can get more offers on the table. There's a lot of stuff that I've improved on but at the same time, I'm looking to get better in other areas as well."
Last Friday night, the current SMU commitment put his talents on display. At the conclusion of a 48-28 win over Midland, Atchison registered eight pancakes and seven knockdowns.
Atchison's mindset of never being satisfied with his production has led him to work hard enough to already have six offers on the table. The most recent came two weeks ago when the three-star recruit opened an official offer from Notre Dame.
"I really didn't expect this. I had been told by different college coaches that they would offer me but I didn't think that one from Notre Dame was going to come in. To me, it summed it up in one word, it was just 'wow'."
After giving a verbal commitment to SMU three months ago, Atchison says that the Mustangs still have his word but the new offer from the Irish definitely has gotten his attention.
"Last year, Notre Dame was actually one of my top choices of where I wanted to go. But SMU came in the picture and I saw the different kinds of things that they have to offer there so I chose SMU."
Atchison looks forward to going to several SMU games this fall. The 6-foot-1, 256-pound lineman also plans on taking a few official visits to other places as well.
