Johnson receiving attention, remaining committed

It's been an abbreviated football season thus far for Missouri City wide receiver Darius Johnson. Because of the hurricane striking the area recently, Hightower high school had to sit out several weeks before resuming their season. It was a long wait for Johnson as well as the opener didn't go as planned.

"I got hit real hard during the game," said Johnson. "I ended up being a lung contusion."

Even though he had to miss half of the game, the speedy wideout still produced three catches for 69 yards.

Forced to only observe workouts for a week, Johnson used the suspended season to his advantage and continued to work hard. Last Thursday, the team made their comeback and so did Johnson.

In a 55-0 route of Willowridge, the three-star prospect brought in four catches for 53 yards and a touchdown.

With the season back on track, the current SMU commit continues to receive phone calls from other Division-I programs, such as Iowa State, Kansa State, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, and Baylor.

"It's been going well. I'm getting a lot more schools giving me attention now that the season has started."

Even with more schools coming his way, Johnson said that he's currently sticking with the commitment that he gave the Mustangs back in June.

"They seem real cool. Coach Jeff Reinebold is a real nice wide receivers coach. He makes me feel wanted by calling about every week."

The coaching staff on the Hilltop has had a great deal to do with Johnson's commitment. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound receiver states that he's looking forward to being a part of the program as it is taking a turn in the right direction.

"It's pretty cool. I really want to play under the Hawaii offense that they had. They threw the ball a lot. It'll be fun to see and fun to watch. June Jones is a great coach, in my opinion.

"I was going to go to the Navy game because my cousin committed to Navy. But it's a ways. I don't know which game I'm going to catch, but I'm going to catch one."

While Johnson continues to keep up with his Mustangs, look for him to remain in contact with some of the schools listed above as well. There's a possibility that Johnson could be taking visits to Baylor or Kansas State at some point in the future.
