IN THE HUDDLE: Wylie Pirates

After a evenly-matched first half highlighted by big plays, Wylie and Cedar Hill went to the half tied at 21-21 in the Class 5A, Div. II Regional semifinal at Texas Stadium Saturday afternoon. To avoid a shootout, Wylie changed its approach and went to its ground game in the second half. Running back Nick Knott responded and the Pirates' defense held Cedar Hill scoreless down the stretch for a hard-fought 31-21 victory. Wylie takes on Copperas Cove in the State semifinals next week.

1. Nikita Whitlock, Defensive Lineman, Wylie

(On holding Cedar Hill's Ben Malena to 116 yards) "We've seen great running backs all year, but what we've done best is to contain them. We carry out our assignments and do what out coach tells us to that's how we win games."

"There's really not a whole lot to say about. We just want to have another good week of practice and come through and win another game. Being disciplined and being Pirates that's what we do."

2. Nick Knott, Running Back, Wylie

(On his dive into the end zone to clinch the win) "Last night we talked about effort, determination and what we can do for the team. I just looked at it and said to myself that 'I've got to get there.'"

"This team is my family. I know they've got my back and we all know that we can do whatever we have to win."

Last week stats: 15 carries, 159 yards; two catches 58 yards, three touchdowns

3. Jerod Monk, Quarterback, Wylie

"Winning never gets old. We're one of four teams left in our division and that's something I've always dreamed of. A state championship would be the best thing in the world I would never forget it. We've got to watch a lot of film and study a lot to get ready for this week's opponent. But if we can play like we did this week, we should come out with a victory."

"(On Nick Knott's performance) He's a phenomenal running back and came out and just dominated. I talked to him before the game and told him that I needed him to be that phenomenal player today he did what I asked him to do. We played playoff football and ran the ball right at them because of him and I couldn't have asked for anything better. I wouldn't be here without my offensive line, running backs and wide receivers. They do everything to make me look good."
