ASU adds JUCO commit

LeQuan Lewis, a junior college cornerback at Cerritos (Calif.) College committed to Arizona State coaches during his official visit to the school this weekend.

On Thursday, Lewis hosted ASU coaches for an in-home visit, and he told them he expected to commit while in Tempe.

When he got a chance to see the ASU campus for himself, he made the pledge.

"The place is a really cool," Lewis said. "I know a couple of the basketball players there (James Harden and Derek Glasser) because I went to high school with them (at nearby Artesia). Plus, it's in the Pac-10 and you can't beat the competition. And then the weather is really good there most of the year."

Lewis, 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, is a speedster who is also a standout on special teams as a return man.

As a high school senior, he clocked 10.73 seconds to finish second in the CIF Division III 100 meters, and at a junior college combine at Cerritos earlier this year he turned in a hand-timed record 4.29 second effort in the 40-yard dash.

"I'm trying to get even faster," Lewis said. "I want to make that a 4.29 electronic. But I think I do alright."

Lewis said that he is on pace to graduate in December, assuming his finishes up strong in the classroom in the next week. He is going to sign with the Sun Devils this week as a mid-year transfer, on the first possible day to do so, Wednesday.

"They haven't really talked to me about how all the plan to use me yet," Lewis said. "We'll do that when we get out there. I just told them on Thursday at my in-home I was ready to commit and then I did it talking to coach Erickson today. He said they were really happy to have me."

Lewis said that he did not earn any post-season honors this year, primarily, as he viewed it, because opponents stopped throwing the ball on his side of the field, and did not kick to him on special teams.

"I want to play against the best competition and just see how I stack up. I'm going to get that in the Pac-10. I like this opportunity."

Lewis is Arizona State's first junior college commitment in the class and 13th overall pledge.
