About this time of year during the recruiting process rumors begin to fly everywhere. Some of them turn out to have at least a ribbon of fact in them while others are nothing more than just a plain and simple rumor. How these rumors get started are often more interesting than the rumors themselves. Recently rumors began to pop up about the status of long-time Southern Miss commitment Jonathan Guerry of New Hope (Columbus, Miss.).
Guerry didn't sit around and let misleading information be spread about his status. He contacted BGN to clear the air.
"I just want to set the record straight," Guerry told BGN. "There was a story that came out the other day where the writer took my words and twisted them around and made it sound like I was saying something I didn't".
All the fuss started when newly hired Miss State coach Dan Mullen visited with Guerry at New Hope High School.
"I talked with Coach Mullen and he seems like a good coach," Guerry said. "I told Coach Mullen that I appreciated him coming to see me but I am happy with Southern Miss."
Guerry maintains that he was misrepresented in his recollection of the meeting by another recruiting service.
"When I first started getting recruited, back in the 10th and 11th grade," Guerry said. "I was getting mail from everyone but State. At that time I did want to be recruited by State. That's where I wanted to go back then, not now."
When the Bulldogs failed to show any interest Guerry began to look else where.
"Southern Miss started recruiting me hard," he said. "I went down to some events and camps they had and I met the coaches. I'm happy with my commitment to Southern Miss, I'm still firm with Southern Miss."
Guerry's only official visit is scheduled for Southern Miss on January 9th. In addition to Southern Miss he garnered interest from Stanford, Miss State and others.
