CougZone Coach Of The Year Finalist - Rick Sloan

It has been somewhat of a rollercoaster year for Washington State University track and field head coach Rick Sloan. The Wazzu head man began the year knowing full well that his Cougars would be unable to host a home track meet due to the expected renovation of Martin Stadium encroaching upon Mooberry Track. Due to the financial downturn, the renovation construction ground to a halt but that did not mean Sloan could suddenly schedule a home meet - so he had to take his Cougars on the road.

Forced into a two-year road trip - no home meets are expected to be scheduled in 2010 either - Sloan's Cougars responded by placing 10 Cougars in the NCAA championships where one of them - sophomore men's 400-meter hurdler Jeshua Anderson - repeated as national champion and broke the school record in the process. After a final ranking of 25th in the final poll of the year, the Wazzu men finished in 17th place overall at the NCAA championships.

The Cougar women also had their successes under Sloan with sophomore javelin tosser Marissa Tschida breaking the school record and finishing sixth at the NCAA championships while senior women's 400-meter hurdler Lorraine King added another Pac-10 title to the Cougar coffers and junior 1500-meter runner Lisa Egami turning in the third-best time in school history.

Under Sloan's reign this year, Wazzu amassed four Pac-10 Track & Field athletes of the week and placed 15 athletes on the Pac-10's all-academic team and boasted a 990 APR for the women's team.

Rick Sloan has been a constant source of success in his 36 years at Wazzu and for these reasons and others, CougZone voters have made Sloan one of our three finalists for CougZone Coach of the Year.
