Memphis CB in search of SEC offer

Memphis (Whitehaven) cornerback Chaz Moore was one of many prospects at Houston Nutt's camp on Saturday who was vying for a scholarship offer.

And, while he doesn't know if the offer will come soon, he does expect to be offered before his senior season is over.

"The camp went well," Moore said on Monday. "I think I was one of the best defensive backs in camp. Houston Nutt said he liked me a lot."

Moore, a 5-foot-9 and , 160 pound prospect who is rated three stars by Rivals.com, already has an offer from Southern Miss, but it is an SEC offer that he covets.

"I think Ole Miss will be my first SEC offer," Moore said. "If I don't get the offer this week, I think it will come during the season. Ole Miss told me I played good and have a smooth technique, but they want to evaluate my film before they make a decision."

And if that decision isn't favorable, Moore thinks he has another chance at an offer.

"I think if they don't offer now, when they see me play this season, I'll have another shot to show them what I can do and get an offer."

Moore has made the camp rounds and has been impressive at every stop.

"I went to the Middle Tennessee Camp and was the best cover corner there," he said. Then I went to Alabama and was one of the top five guys there. I camped at the National Underclassmen Camp (NUC) in Memphis and was the MVP for cornerbacks and got invited to the National (Southeast) camp in Atlanta."

Moore, who was lauded for his outstanding play in Atlanta by Rivals.com, said he passed an opportunity to go to the national NUC in favor of Mississippi camps.

In addition to the Ole Miss camp on Saturday, Moore said he was in Starkville on Friday and ran a 4.5 40-yard dash at that camp.

Moore said he's not for sure if Mississippi State will offer, but he would like offers from both Mississippi SEC schools. Beyond that, he doesn't have a favorite.

"It doesn't matter where I play, I just want a chance to play and I'm hoping it's in the SEC," he said.

Moore's appearance at the senior only camp was not by accident. He camped at Ole Miss in June and was invited back.

"The coaches (at Ole Miss' June camp) saw me and said they wanted me to come back for the senior camp," Moore said. "They said they wanted to see how I did against the better competition that would be there for the July camp."

Moore said he felt he did well at the Ole Miss camp - he said he covered a receiver one-on-one during eight drills and didn't have any passes caught against him.

He also was able to talk to Rebel cornerbacks coach Chris Vaughn.

"He's telling me about the same thing that Coach Nutt is," Moore said. "He said they like me but want to look at my film and for me to call them later this week."

In addition to the camps mentioned, Moore also camped at Southern Miss, the only school to offer at this point.

"I liked it a lot at Southern Miss," he said. "My recruiting coach there told me just to come on down and to come to play."

Moore has a 2.6 GPA and has made a 17 on his ACT.

Rivals.com's Barry Every write up on Moore at the Atlanta NUC camp: One player who came with his "A" game was Moore. Defensive back easily was the deepest position at the camp, and he was able to separate himself from the rest of the field early during one-on-ones. He has a tremendous backpedal to stay in perfect position in man coverage. He also possesses the ball skills that will allow him to change the outcome of a game on one play. Moore currently has an offer from Southern Miss, but I expect the number of offers to increase as word gets out about his ability to stick like glue on receivers. His superior showing earned him defensive back MVP honors.
