After replacing eight starters from last years defense, the 'new look' Beavers
opened the season with a good showing against the visiting Portland State Vikings.
The Beavers had solid tackling, something they had struggled with in past years
opening games and they were able to work out some kinks against the FCS opponent.
A new name tops the list this year as sophomore safety Lance Mitchell earned
his first Giant Killer Stone Award of his career with a total of 9.50 points.
Mitchell not only tallied seven tackles, he added a pass break-up as well. Several
other defensive backs scored well including senior cornerback Tim Clark who
forced a fumble and had a pass break-up.
Senior linebacker Keaton Kristick is a familiar name on the Giant Killer MVP
list. Kristick was all over the place on Saturday and was in on many plays.
The defensive leader will no doubt be a familiar name on the list in weeks to
Without Victor Butler and Slade Norris fighting over the award, redshirt freshman
Castro Masaniai edged out Kevin Frahm for BeaverBlitz's D-line honors.
Masaniai tallied three tackles, but a tackle for loss is what put him over the
top. With the heavy rotation on the line it will be interesting to watch the
honorees week to week.
