Inside the numbers: Not so special teams

Each week, we'll look at some statistics involving individuals and/or teams that we find intriguing.

1. Not so special teams. Through two weeks, six teams have allowed kickoffs to be returned for touchdowns. There's one school that has allowed two kickoff-return scores: Alabama. Virginia Tech's Dyrell Roberts took one back against the Tide in the opener and Florida International's T.Y. Hilton took one back this past Saturday. The Tide is allowing 28.5 yards on 15 returns.

2. Not just another passing fancy. To the surprise of no one, Texas Tech's Taylor Potts leads the nation in passing at 430.5 yards per game. His predecessor, Graham Harrell, led the nation last season at 393.2 yards per game. Potts goes against his first real secondary this week, when the Red Raiders play at Texas after opening against North Dakota and Rice.

3. Offensive - and in a bad way. Miami University is the only team in the nation that's scoreless after two games. The RedHawks lost 42-0 to Kentucky in their opener, then 48-0 to Boise State this past Saturday. Miami is 119th in the nation in total offense at 191.0 yards per game. The only team worse is Western Kentucky (0-2), at 183.5 yards per game. But at least the Hilltoppers have scored 20 points.

4. It's a bit slippery. Hawaii already has lost seven fumbles in two games - but still is 2-0. There were 17 teams that fumbled less than seven times all of last season.
